Build a reproducible report
A good ReStory bug report lets the developer reach the same failure without guessing. The official developer instructions ask for context such as the platform, game version, exact issue, and relevant data; the shortest useful report is a clean sequence from launch to the problem. Before testing a workaround, preserve the state that demonstrates the bug.
- 01
Restart the game once and confirm the issue still occurs.
- 02
Record platform, game version, device or story job, and the last successful action.
- 03
Write the shortest repeatable sequence from a clean launch to the problem.
- 04
Attach a screenshot or short clip and include logs/data only where the developer requests them.
Recovery order
Recovery should move from least invasive to most invasive. Recheck the current official patch notes or announcements, reproduce the issue once, and only then test a documented workaround. Save-folder changes should come after a complete backup, because deleting or replacing files can remove useful evidence as well as progress.
- Back up before deleting, renaming, or replacing any file.
- Check official announcements for a newer patch before using an old workaround.
- Treat community replies as hypotheses until reproduced on the same version and platform.
Classify the failure
Write down whether the problem blocks a repair, prevents a customer conversation, affects a save, or is only visual. Include the device or story job and the exact text of any prompt, because ‘the repair failed’ is less actionable than ‘the completion state did not update after the named action.’ If the problem is intermittent, include what changed between the successful and unsuccessful attempts. Say whether the issue happens before loading a save, during a repair interaction, after a dialogue choice, or when handing the item back. That boundary helps separate a progression problem from a display, input, or data problem.
Capture the environment
The same symptom can have different causes on Windows, macOS, and Steam Deck. Record the platform, Steam branch if applicable, game version, display or controller setup when relevant, and whether Steam Cloud was enabled. The developer may request logs or the game-data folder; provide only the requested files and keep an untouched backup. Include whether you changed resolution, language, controller, or save location immediately before the failure, but do not guess at a cause in place of the observation. If another player cannot reproduce the issue, the exact environment becomes even more important.
Use official channels first
The developer’s Steam bug-report instructions are the primary route for a report. Official Steam announcements can show whether a known issue has already been addressed, while the Community Hub can help you find similar wording. A player reply is useful context but does not confirm that a workaround is safe or current. Link the exact discussion or announcement you used, keep the original report concise, and update it with a new reproduction only when the version or steps changed. Avoid opening duplicate reports that omit the build and platform.
A report template
Use a compact structure: Issue, platform, ReStory version, device or job, expected result, actual result, exact reproduction steps, frequency, and attachments. Add the save-backup location and any safe test already performed, but never upload private account information. If the developer asks for logs or a data folder, follow that request precisely and say which files were supplied. Finish with whether the issue is reproducible after a full restart, because that small detail can save a developer a second round of questions.
Before sharing a save or log
Inspect an attachment for account names, personal paths, screenshots with unrelated private information, or files that the developer did not request. Keep your untouched backup locally and share only the smallest relevant set. If you cannot tell whether a file contains private data, ask the official support channel what format they need instead of uploading the entire folder publicly.
Re-test after an official update
A patch can change a repair prompt, save behavior, or a known issue without changing your original report. Record the old version, install the official update, and run the same shortest reproduction from the same safe state. Report whether the result is fixed, changed, or still identical; do not rewrite the historical report as if the earlier build never existed.
Pending confirmation
The published official material does not provide a universal fix for every stuck job, black screen, crash, or corrupted save. Exact workaround steps, recovery success rates, and issue-by-issue status are pending confirmation until the developer documents them or a current-version reproduction is verified. A complete report and reversible backup are safer than speculative file edits.
